Holocaust Museum Pays Tribute to Historian Peter Hayes

The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum pays tribute to Professor Peter Hayes of Northwestern University for his long-term contributions to Holocaust Studies. Hayes has written or edited twelve books including his 2017 book Why?: Explaining the Holocaust which offers responses to difficult questions such as:

  • Why the Jews were targeted;
  • Why the Germans;
  • Why was extermination so swift and broad;
  • Why didn’t more Jews fight back more often; and
  • Why didn’t more people come to the aid of the Jews.

Hayes taught at Northwestern for thirty-six years from 1980 to 2016 and currently is the chair of the Museum’s Academic Committee of Museum.
